Inspiration Wednesday Week #1

March 11, 2015 at 8:30 amCategory:Art Journal

beginnings

I have been art journaling for a few years now. Nothing very consistent-I dabble in my art journal for periods at a time. I go through spells where I can’t get enough of it. When I started creating this way, I looked for inspiration in artists that had been smearing paint in journals and came across Donna Downey. I used to wake up on Wednesday mornings so excited for her Inspiration Wednesday videos that would pop up on both her blog and on youtube. I was sad to see those kind of fizzle away for a period of time because they both pushed me out of my “box” to try new things AND they gave me a weekly kick to open up the journal and play.

I was so thrilled to see that Donna was offering an Inspiration Wednesday video series that started at the beginning of January. (It isn’t too late to join in!) There was a small charge for the videos which I certainly didn’t mind paying. (I make videos so I know the time that goes into them!)

This is my creation from week #1. I love Donna’s ideas! When I first started art journaling, I would almost copy her ideas step-by-step as I was still learning how things worked. Now, I love to watch the video without touching any art supplies. I watch it a second time once I have an idea of how I want to use her creative ideas as my own springboard. This page was certainly a spin-off of  Donna’s ideas! The part of her first video that I loved the most was her use of chipboard letters on her page. All of the letters of this powerful quote are chipboard letters from my stash-they got beautiful makeovers as I added paints to dress them up.

I hope you enjoyed my version of Donna’s creation! I will post new pages as I work on them. Yes, I am two videos behind. Maybe art journaling needs to be on my agenda this weekend. Stay tuned & GO MAKE SOME ART!

Three Birds On a Branch Art Journaling

January 31, 2015 at 8:00 amCategory:Art Journal | LifeBook

I thought it would be fun to switch it up a little today and share some art journaling with you. These pages are inspired by a video in the LifeBook 2014 Class which I LOVE. There is something so rewarding with starting out pages by covering them with random stuff. I mean check out these pages…BINGO cards, stickers, Monopoly money, playing cards…what an amazing collage of nonsense. I had so much fun ripping, tearing and glueing. IMG_4344

I then added lots of scribbles, colors and doodles. There is something so liberating about the randomness of this background. It looks so messy at this point yet it comes together in the end.

I used to say that I couldn’t draw until LifeBook changed my life. The wonderful teachers taught me how to sketch and not overthink it. These little birds just make me smile! IMG_4346

I created this Pomeranian art back at the beginning of the Summer. I wanted to share this little cutie with you in hopes that it will make you smile. I get a kick out of it every time I see it! IMG_4410

Summer Break Art Journaling

June 27, 2014 at 8:28 amCategory:Art Journal

I have been loving the structure of Project Life lately. BUT, I had this urge to grab my art journal this week and I didn’t fight it. I had no clue what I was going to create so I just “went with it”. I opened it up to a page that had some random things glued to it and written on it. It was already covered with some gelli plate prints, a tag that I experimented with, some random writing and a phrase from a piece of mail that advertised a Broadway play. I love to add very random, sporadic things to my journal. It helps to get my creativity flowing. I do it often with those things that we say we may use someday. For example, I received roses yesterday from some of the kids at school and one of them was wrapped with a rose print paper. I plan to collage that into my art journal after I finish this blog post. There will be no finished goal in mind-it’s a future starting place for a page and the paper is now living in my book.

IMG_4357I squirted out lots of random colors of paint onto a piece of grid paper (I do that so I can add the grid paper into the journal later). I made shapes and blotches of colors without any real thought of design. Actually, I didn’t think about it much at all.

IMG_4362Next, I sketched out a face with a graphite pencil and covered her with watered down gesso to give it a base.

IMG_4372My sweet love bought these Primacolor Watercolor Pencils for me a few summers ago. I have used them a lot (but not enough) and love them. I thought it would be fun to play with them and add beautiful soft colors to this face.

IMG_4371I have to admit that I wasn’t happy with her. She seemed flat and did not excite me. I put her to the side overnight and stopped staring at her. The next day I grabbed the journal again and just started playing. I added a ton of doodling and stenciling and a load of color! Hope you enjoy how the page evolved! Happy Summer!

My Little Word–SHARE 2014

January 23, 2014 at 9:36 pmCategory:Art Journal | LifeBook

IMG_3096

This is another page in my art journal inspired by a great weekly LifeBook 2014 Video! SHARE is my word for 2014-I am not sure how that word will transpire in my year but I plan to keep it in the front of my mind when I am making day-to-day decisions. My first “share goal” is to share my art with others! I guess that translates into my blogging. What is your word for 2014?

LifeBook 2014 Lesson #1 Art Guardian

January 20, 2014 at 8:00 amCategory:Art Journal | LifeBook

IMG_3061

It’s January so it’s time for LifeBook 2014 to start. So far, I am really loving the videos. Our first lesson was to create our Art Guardian-the lesson was very detailed and informative. My angel looks a lot like the instructors but that’s what I normally do. I tend to do the lesson “as is” the very first time. Then, I use what I learned to create future art. On my beautiful girl is the word SHARE which is my 2014 word of the year. How do you “SHARE” if your own life?

LifeBook 2014 Warm Up Lesson

January 13, 2014 at 8:00 amCategory:Art Journal | LifeBook

IMG_3037

Here I go…raving again about LifeBook! This is the very first lesson of LB2014 and I just couldn’t wait to get started. This year, I plan to do each lesson in the week it is presented so I can share my art on the FaceBook page and get involved in the LB community that is offered.

Tam (our wonderfully talented host) taught this warm up lesson. It was fun to play with paint and mix beautiful colors together. I tend to gravitate to the same color palette-pinks, blues, purples and pops of yellow (sometimes orange makes an appearance). This page is no exception! I also love to add quotes to my pages. I save a wonderful collection of quotes on my Words of Simple Abundance Pinterest Board. One of my goals during LB2014 is to add some colors to my art-I am currently focused on adding red…we shall see.

Lotsa Hearts & A Touch of RED

January 7, 2014 at 8:00 amCategory:Art Journal

IMG_2861

I am so drawn to hearts! As I look through my art journal (which I do often) I notice that there are tons of hearts. I also notice that this is a popular stencil for me. AND (wow) I used red on this page! Just yesterday I wrote about how red seems to be neglected in my art and here it is.

Why is the heart so popular for me? First, I am surrounded by people and things that I love. My husband, my family, pups, my friends. As far as physical things, my art and comfy apartment are at the top of the list. The hearts just seem to come out of me and speak to me. The other part (less obvious) is that I had open heart surgery many years ago. All my life, the heart symbol had serious significance for me. It is something that I am proud of-I am a survivor and live my life trying to be the best that I can be. Bring on the art and bring on the HEARTS!

Butterfly Art Journal-Pushing My Color Palette…or not?!

January 6, 2014 at 8:59 amCategory:Art Journal

IMG_3043

I have to admit that I LOVE this page! This is one that I created through another amazing LifeBook 2013 lesson. LOVE, love love LifeBook! LifeBook 2014 started last week and my intention is to keep up on a weekly basis. I have a bunch of videos saved from LB 2013 and will dabble with them as I have time. I love that LB pushes me to try new things and mix different media in ways that I may not have tried before.

One major thing that I have been noticing is that I tend to use the same colors over and over…and over and over. I wonder why I even buy red paint. I never use it. I used to feel that way about orange but I have been using it lately. It’s odd because there is SO much orange in our home decor so obviously this is a color I like. The colors that I grab for my art aren’t colors that appear in our home. Well, with the exception of my art studio. My hubby doesn’t object to most of my ideas for our apartment unless they are just way too feminine which isn’t really my taste anyway (except for my art creations).

So, maybe with LB14, I need to push my color palette a bit. Maybe grab that red. Hmmm….maybe.
